According to the laws of nature, disease gradually erodes the body and life fades away little by little. A few years before her death, French anthropologist Françoise Héritier wrote The Sweetness of Life. The book starts with a letter the author sent to her doctor and then became a long list of everyday reasons that make life worth living.

Local video artist Joein Leong and dancer Oscar Cheong, will join hands with American artist Morgan O’Hara, who is renowned for her “live transmission” drawing, to explore the meaning of disappearance and incompletion of life. It is a recollection of what has disappeared and a testimony of what is gone.

Remarks from Artists

Director and Choreography

To those nights you and I have spent together.

“Clearly see that everything in the world is impermanent, and you can realize the inner world of true peace. ” Master Sheng Yen

Try to reorganize all types of clues, all those you love.

It is about things that we will forget sooner or later, things that seem to be insignificant. Body, feelings, words, movements, breaths, daily routines, walks, combing, dressing, taking stuff, twisting fingers: these are the only things between you and I.

Try to repeat the same movement in different layers, extending its quality. Try to establish a disciplinary, internal rhythm to fend off the random, mutated and distorted counterattacks.

It is about fear, helplessness, anxiety, and even sometimes despair, not relying on the outside world for power but looking for the equilibrium—center center, tranquille—in the inner world.

A wistful longing has a highly dense rhythm. There are worries of being inadequate despite how hard you’ve tried.

When the body is beyond the control of oneself, when there are restrains everywhere, one is more eager to strive for freedom and search for the power penetration, albeit it takes every effort to move a finger while all these efforts are invisible to the naked eye. Imagine becoming a point in the air—subtle, agile, effortless and fast moving. All you want to remember is the state between each movement. Thanks Oscar for striving his best to imprint everything in his body.

Incorporate smiles into a language, which then disappears. Embrace sounds, lights, floor and lines.

Thanks Joein for her pureness and unpretentiousness.

Thanks Morgan for coming here and leaving behind these beautiful marks.

Thanks At Light and the people running this venue. Let light shine on everything here.

At last, thanks Mandy for the precious 10 minutes, allowing us to come together at the day when the story begins. The day when we meet each person.

Under breath
Between light and shadow
Impression, feeling, memory, longing
There is no language between us
Language is inadequate to express
Disappearance
It has always been here
Light has always been here

Oscar Cheong
Dancer

Toes, soles, knees, hips, march forward and breathe.
Belly, chest, shoulders, arms, palms, fingers, move and stop.
I’ve intended to focus on every change of my body, as if putting myself under a microscope at every moment. The harder I try to focus and see, the less I get grasp of. It is seemingly destined to be lost in focus at the moment when it is under scrutiny: the actual moving pace of body, things and objects is much faster than imagined.
When I thought I could learn more about myself, I forgot the principles of the world.

Graphic Design

This time I highly emphasized that graphic design is part of the performance.

Poster is my stage, and the space is a box framed in a white paper. When all the performing elements are extracted—life, mud (Le Sel de la Vie), touching, burr, handwriting, and slight adjustment—the scene is the main axis, the abstract lines are the dancer, and the symbols are details of the performance.

I mimicked the performance of American artist Morgan O'Hara, the line creation that resembles her subconscious. I recorded the trajectory of my cursor on a computer screen during work. These lines are the marks of my creation, radial in the middle, and directly lead the audience’s attention to my presence when they share the same feelings.

Thus, I conscientiously wrote down the concept of my creation.

Selected Quotes

Le Sel de la vie
Françoise Héritier

Fall in love with a deep, hesitant, crystal clear, hoarse, passionate, full of laughter, or gentle voice. Then imagine an appearance for each voice and give it an eternal age.

Distressed because of the perspicuous faith embodied in the number 40. Being scared of simple little things.

Talk to yourself in your mind, and preserve your thoughts frankly about the people that you have once fallen in love with.

Anyway, I give you some clues. Perhaps someone will ask you about what kind of a person I am twenty years later.

A gathering with family or friends, beers, red wines and white wines on a bar stool, a coffee under the sun, a nap under the tree, the feeling of intense happiness on a cool autumn night, a sunset, waking up at night when everyone is sleeping, playing with cats, lighting a cigarette casually, dancing, exploring an unfamiliar city, making lame jokes, making a difficult dish, chewing over a same idea, emptying your mind, a tranquil moment alone, the smell of freshly-baked croissant at street, a tactful wink, eating ice-cream or chocolate, when someone is looking at you, when someone is listening to you, moving with agility and walking with light feet, sleeping in, meeting with friends that you have not seen for a long time, listening attentively to others…

《Fullmoon》

The recitation of Fullmoon originates from The Shletering Sky by late US author Paul Bowles. In the movie version of The Shletering Sky by Bernardo Bertolucci, Bowles recites Fullmoon by himself in the end scene. Ryuichi Sakamoto then uses the movie recording to make a monologue in ten different languages.

Because we don't know when we will die
We get to think of life as an inexhaustible well
Yet everything happens only a certain number of times
And a very small number, really
How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood
Some afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive your life without it?
Perhaps four or five times more
Perhaps not even that
How many more times will you watch the full moon rise?
Perhaps twenty, and yet it all seems limitless

About Theatre Audio Description

Audio description transforms the visual information into words, for instance, the body movement, facial expression, clothing and style of performers, as well as the stage set, props, changes of lighting and others, are coherently described and detailedly explained in a verbal manner.

This allows the audience, who might be less sensitive to visual cues, could enjoy and appreciate the performance in the same way as others, making art accessible to everyone.
